A Fife businessman is taking on the London Marathon to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK — driven by a deeply personal reason.
Jim Parker is running in memory of his father, who died two years ago after a long and devastating battle with Parkinson’s disease.
“Watching someone you love slowly lose control of their body over more than a decade is something you never get over,” Jim said. “You feel helpless knowing there’s no cure — and nothing you can do to stop it.”
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition that currently affects around 166,000 people in the UK, a figure expected to rise to over 173,000 by 2030 as the population ages. A new diagnosis is made every 20 minutes.
Despite its growing impact, there is still no cure.
Jim hopes his London Marathon challenge will not only raise vital funds but also increase awareness of the condition and the urgent need for research.
“Training for a marathon is tough,” he added, “but it’s nothing compared to what people living with Parkinson’s go through every single day.”
Funds raised will support Parkinson’s UK and Parkinson’s UK in Scotland’s work in funding research, improving care, and supporting families affected by the disease.
Jim is encouraging the local community and beyond to support the cause.
